Rui Ruiru Factory: Rebuilding a Heritage

Great coffee often carries stories of resilience — and Kenya’s Rui Ruiru Coffee Factory stands as one of them.

Once a thriving hub for coffee farmers in Mathira, Nyeri County, Rui Ruiru gradually fell into disrepair after years of neglect. Its revival came through the determination of younger generations within the local community, who came together to rebuild drying tables, restore water channels, and return life to the factory floor.

Today, Rui Ruiru has evolved beyond restoration. By embracing innovative approaches such as anaerobic fermentation alongside Kenya’s longstanding processing traditions, the factory has become recognized for coffees that balance clarity with experimentation.
