Burundi single origin coffee is produced on the expansive Gahahe Estate in the high altitude Kayanza region. This organic certified estate was built in the mid 1980s and today is outfitted with a modern washing stations for processing coffee cherry and a sampling lad that is used by its in house agronomist team. The washing station manager is also an agronomist who provides farming advice to the local communities. The average pay for the regular workers is 300,000 Burundian Francs (BIF) per month. This amount is double the pay of other competing washing stations in the area. Additionally, managers are provided housing with electricity and a motor vehicle. Gahahe has placed in several Cup of Excellence competitions, in 2014 it placed 7th and 27th, and in 2015 achieved 4th place.
This station receives cherries from more than 1250 local coffee farmers distributed in 16 neighboring hills. The washing station is equipped with 10 fermentation tanks, 4 cherry selection tables, 2 soaking tanks, a drying area with 180 african beds and 18 shaded pre-drying beds. During the harvest season, Gahahe has the capacity to process more than 600 tons of coffee.
